Of Gemini’s two current fee schedules, only ActiveTrader’s prints a rate: its September 1, 2026 ladder starts at 0.600% maker and 1.200% taker and falls with volume or balance. The Gemini app’s schedule, dated February 15, 2026, prints no percentage. Each app order’s fee is shown on the review screen, and Instant orders carry a spread.
That is the whole of the Gemini app vs ActiveTrader fees question as Gemini itself answers it. This desk read both schedules on Gemini’s site on 23 September 2026. The guides that rank for this query print a tidy 0.50% fee and a bracket table for the app side; neither appears on the operator’s page as read that day. What follows sets the two schedules side by side, works the ActiveTrader side at a fixed order size, and says plainly why the app side cannot be worked the same way.
What does the Gemini app’s fee schedule actually say?
The page is titled Gemini Mode Fees and dated February 15, 2026. It covers orders placed through the Gemini mode interface on the website or the mobile app, which is what most people mean by “the Gemini app”.
It commits to a method, not a number. Fees are calculated when the order is placed and may be influenced by payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction, asset and other costs. You can see the fee on the trade review screen before confirming, and the page says outright that fees may vary for similar transactions.
The spread gets its own paragraph. Instant and Recurring orders include a spread in the quoted price; a crypto-to-crypto convert includes it in the exchange rate. Gemini may retain excess spread, the spread may also vary for similar transactions, and Gemini may test changes to fees and spread across asset, order size, jurisdiction and type of trade. The marketing department will call that flexibility. A schedule reader calls it a page with no rate on it.
This desk did not open the app or see a trade review screen, so nothing here says what that screen shows for any given order.
What does the ActiveTrader schedule commit to?
The ActiveTrader Fee Schedule, dated September 1, 2026, applies to orders placed through ActiveTrader and the exchange API. It is a maker-taker ladder of 13 spot tiers. Your tier is set by trailing 30-day volume across all order books, excluding stablecoin pairs, or by total asset balance in USD; where the two point to different tiers, you pay the lower fee. Tiers are recalculated daily at about 2am UTC.
Maker fees are charged only when a resting order matches, and cancelling a maker order costs nothing. The full ladder, rung by rung, is in our ActiveTrader fee schedule review; this post uses only the rungs it needs.
Gemini app vs ActiveTrader fees, side by side
| Gemini Mode (app and website) | ActiveTrader and API | |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule date | February 15, 2026 | September 1, 2026 |
| Published rate | None | 0.600% / 1.200% at entry, down to 0.000% / 0.020% |
| How cost is set | Per order; payment method, size, market, jurisdiction, asset | Maker or taker, by 30-day volume or asset balance |
| Where you see it | Trade review screen, before confirming | The published ladder |
| Spread | Included in Instant and Recurring quotes; may be retained | Not mentioned on the page |
| Same order, same fee? | “May vary for similar transactions” | Fixed by tier |
| Fee currency | Quote currency | Quote currency |
| Change notice | At least three calendar days | At least three calendar days |
What does a $1,000 ActiveTrader order cost?
Arithmetic only, on the September 1, 2026 rates, for spot orders outside the stablecoin pairs:
| Tier (30-day volume or balance) | Maker on $1,000 | Taker on $1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Entry, from $0 | $6.00 | $12.00 |
| $10K volume or $1M balance | $4.00 | $8.00 |
| $25K volume or $5M balance | $2.50 | $5.00 |
| $75K volume or $15M balance | $1.25 | $2.50 |
A new account with a small balance sits on the first row, where an immediately filled order costs 1.2% of its value. The same $1,000 bought through the app has no equivalent row, because the app’s schedule publishes nothing to multiply. That gap is the finding, not an omission: any figure that claims to price the app side from Gemini’s schedule is estimating. For how these rungs compare with other venues, see ActiveTrader against Coinbase Advanced and against Kraken Pro.
Where do the 0.50% convenience fee and the brackets come from?
From third-party guides, as read on 23 September 2026. This desk did not read any archived Gemini page, so nothing here says whether Gemini ever charged these figures.
| Figure in circulation | Where it is printed | Gemini’s page as read |
|---|---|---|
| 0.50% convenience fee | BitDegree (updated April 11, 2026); CoinSpot.io, “near one-half of one percent” (30 January 2026) | Gemini Mode page prints no percentage and does not use the term |
| $0.99 to $2.99 brackets, 1.49% above $200 | BitDegree and CoinSpot.io | No bracket table on the Gemini Mode page |
| ActiveTrader entry 0.20% maker / 0.40% taker | CoinSpot.io, labelled illustrative; BitDegree for limit orders | 0.600% / 1.200% at entry |
| 0.00% maker / 0.03% taker above $500M | BitDegree | 0.000% / 0.020% from $250M |
In the parts of those pages this desk read, none cites Gemini’s February 15, 2026 schedule. A reader comparing the Gemini app vs ActiveTrader fees on those numbers is comparing an ActiveTrader side that does not match the operator’s current ladder with an app side its current page does not print.
Gemini app vs ActiveTrader fees: common questions
Is Gemini ActiveTrader cheaper than the Gemini app?
Nobody can say from the schedules alone, and that includes this desk. ActiveTrader prints its rates: 0.600% maker and 1.200% taker at the entry tier, lower as volume or balance climbs. The Gemini Mode schedule prints no rate; it says each fee is calculated when the order is placed and shown on the trade review screen. Compare that screen’s total against the ActiveTrader arithmetic for the same order.
What is the Gemini convenience fee?
It is a term used by third-party guides, not by Gemini’s current app schedule. BitDegree’s guide, last updated April 11, 2026, describes a 0.50% convenience fee on web and mobile Instant orders. The Gemini Mode Fees page dated February 15, 2026 does not use the phrase; it says Instant and Recurring orders include a spread in the quoted price and that Gemini may retain excess spread.
Is ActiveTrader free on Gemini?
Not for most spot trading. The September 1, 2026 schedule charges 0.600% maker and 1.200% taker at the entry tier, and even the $250M volume tier pays 0.020% as taker. The exceptions it lists are RLUSD/USD, USDC/GUSD and GUSD/USD at 0.00% on both sides, other stablecoin pairs at 0.00% maker, and no fee for cancelling a maker order.
How do I avoid fees on Gemini?
Outside the stablecoin pairs listed at zero, neither schedule offers a fee-free route. What the ActiveTrader page does set out is how its rates fall: maker orders that rest on the book pay less than taker orders, and the tier is set by 30-day volume or asset balance, whichever gives the lower fee. On the app side, the only published guide to cost is the review screen before you confirm.
Fee schedules change on three days’ notice, and the only numbers that bind are the ones on Gemini’s own pages and review screen on the day you trade. Read them yourself before relying on anything here, including this. Crypto assets are high risk, and nothing on Swap Desk is financial advice.
